Sachsenhausen...
I don’t
think I have ever been to a more miserable place than Sachsenhausen
concentration camp. I felt that it was horrible, but necessary. For years you
hear about the concentration camps and what took place there, but being there
on the grounds is something totally different. It’s like the very stones of the
place are repulsive. The whole time I was there I wanted to leave, but I felt
like I needed to see it for it to make an impression. The whole of my being
said the place needed to be torn down and ripped away, but it needs to stay as
a reminder of what happened. It is sacred ground where so many people died
needlessly and cruelly. Humanity needs to remember that and honor them. I think
the place serves a good purpose now because everyone felt the gravity and
horror of what happened. The silence as we left the camp was striking.
I really like the glare in the last photo, of the three men in the memorial, with the glare. I think the light in the corner is a good effect.
