German food: what surprised you? What tasted good/bad. What would you recommend to your American family and friends.

I completely expected, and this is probably a terrible stereotype, to be eating things like sausage and sauerkraut all week.  This has not been the case at all!  Our host family has fed us things like pasta and soup; maybe, like Olivia said, they are avoiding typical German dishes.  I have also eaten out a few times and have really enjoyed the food!  The most amazing fish in Hamburg (since it's by the harbor) and more pasta and ravioli with spinach! YUM!  The only thing I have not liked so far has been the little salads you get with your meals; way to much dressing and it tastes to much like a vinegar.  Also, the food does not leave you hating yourself afterwards!  Not to heavy and greasy like back in the states!   Now, about the bread: There are so many selections of bread it's insane.  It hurts my mouth and I feel like I look silly when I eat it.  I do however love the jams, jellies and NUTELLA!!

My lunch from the restaurant we ate at in Hamburg!! Salmon on pasta and fresh veggies!!  See what I mean; the food is amazing!
